NCBCPS responds to second round of attacks by liberal Texas group PDF Print E-mail
About Us
AUSTIN, TX — The National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools (NCBCPS) issued a statement today in response to yet another attack by the radical leftist organization, the Texas Freedom Network (TFN).

In a report issued this week, TFN claims to have reviewed all the various elective Bible courses recently offered in Texas high schools, and finds none to its liking. The report takes particular aim at NCBCPS’s elective course materials, The Bible in History and Literature. But for the second time in two years, TFN cites several passages from the teacher’s guide to the curriculum out of context, and clearly misrepresents the curriculum's contents and objectives.

“It’s disappointing that TFN has invested so much time and expense to challenge the teaching of the Bible in Texas schools,” said Elizabeth Ridenour, president of NCBCPS. “As far as we are aware, everyone involved in teaching Bible curricula in Texas has only one goal: to present the Bible objectively and appropriately so that students can be exposed to what is arguably the most influential book in history.”

The NCBCPS curriculum, which has been approved for use as an elective course by more than 370 school districts in 37 states, strictly adheres to the provisions of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. An extensive opinion letter attesting to the curriculum’s legality and objectivity has been written by some of the nation’s leading constitutional scholars, including law professors at Princeton and Notre Dame, and a former member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. It is endorsed by a wide variety of scholars, public officials, and clergy from diverse backgrounds.

Moreover, literally hundreds of school board attorneys and school board members, from different political parties and a wide variety of perspectives and religious backgrounds, as well as a host of curriculum specialists in many different localities, have reviewed and approved the NCBCPS curriculum. The NCBCPS curriculum has never been legally challenged.

As TFN concedes, the curriculum does not suggest, and the NCBCPS does not recommend, that any public school teacher ever take a personal position regarding the truth or falsity of any Biblical passage, nor commentator’s positions about such passages. The NCBCPS carefully instructs teachers of the course that public schools must remain objective and neutral in their treatment of religion. NCBCPS recommends that this elective be periodically monitored for constitutional compliance.

NCBCPS pointed out that TFN has little credibility because of its well-known radical agenda. In the past, TFN has gone on record to oppose such widespread events as the National Day of Prayer. People for the American Way, a group whose work is endorsed in the TFN report, is an infamous leftist organization that supports same-sex marriage and the right to burn the American flag, but opposes the posting of the national motto, “In God we Trust,” in public schools.

Greensboro, NC—Aug 31—/Christian Wire Service/- - His movies and television appearances sought to make the world a better place and now actor Chuck Norris and his wife, Gena, have joined the Board of Directors of the National Council on Bible Curriculum In Public Schools with the quest of helping students understand the Bible’s impact on history and literature.

“We receive a lot of requests to get behind a lot of things, but it took us only a few minutes to know that we were to stand behind this important work,” the Norrises said. Mr. and Mrs. Norris are featured in a popular television public service announcement that encourages citizens to bring the Bible back to America’s public schools as an available elective course of study. The announcements are aired on several national networks.

The Norris announcements inform viewers that they can call the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools (NCBCPS) to receive information on how any citizen can help their local school board implement the NCBCPS curriculum. Already this year a record 49 new school districts have decided to offer “The Bible in History and Literature” course. Nationwide, 370 school districts have approved the course for use in over 1,350 schools in 37 states. More than 93% of school boards approached with the curriculum have voted to implement it, and the NCBCPS materials have never been legally challenged.

Already, approximately 190,000 students have taken the elective course in which students read through their entire textbook, the Bible, during the school year. The course is taught objectively from a 300 page teacher’s guide, and emphasizes the Bible’s influence upon literature, history, our legal and educational systems, archeology, art, and other aspects of Western Civilization.

The course is quite popular among high school students. “I have talked with young people who have taken this course and they are so excited about it, they wish they had the opportunity to take another year of the elective,” says Gena Norris.

About Us
September 10, 2003

The American Family Association is now working in cooperation with the National Council On Bible Curriculum In Public Schools (NCBCPS) to return Bible curriculum to the public high schools of America, on campus, during school hours, for credit with the Bible as the textbook.

The NCBCPS has had great success with school districts over the past eight years with this curriculum; and over 153,000 students have already taken this course nationwide.

The Supreme Court says that it is legal to teach Bible curriculum, as does the National Secretary of Education.

Stephen M. Crampton, Chief Counsel for the AFA Center for Law & Policy, stated: "We have carefully reviewed the NCBCPS curriculum, and found it to be constitutional in every respect. For that reason, we have promised to defend against any lawsuit challenging its constitutionality, free of charge, provided only that the school in question implement the curriculum without material alteration."

Some liberal organizations would try to say that the Bible can only be taught in the context of a World Religions course, but this is not true. In Abington Township v. Schempp (374 US 203), the court made a ruling: "...It certainly may be said that the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic qualities. Nothing we have said here indicates that such study of the Bible or of religion, when presented objectively as part of a secular program of education, may not be effected consistently with the First Amendment."

Members of the Board of Directors and Advisory Board include Dr. D. James Kennedy, Dr. Bill Bright (who recently passed away), Joyce Meyer, John Hagee, David Barton, Judge Darrell White, attorneys and legislators from various states, Chuck Norris (the actor) and his wife Gena, Dean Jones (actor), Jane Russell (actress), and Captain Scott O'Grady, among others.

The Bible course curriculum has now been voted into 244 school districts in 33 states. While the ACLU and People For The American Way try to bully and intimidate some school districts, there has never been a legal challenge to this curriculum.

About the Bible Literacy Project
RALEIGH, NC, April 3, 2006 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The Bible Literacy Project (BLP) has been promoting its textbook, THE BIBLE AND ITS INFLUENCE, around the United States, and a visit to the BLP website informs one that their textbook does not "contain errors, use plagiarized material and claim urban legends to be scientific facts." This clearly reveals that the BLP lacks credibility, as in a previous press release, I listed a number of errors such as a contradiction of what Jesus actually said about parables (page 215 in their textbook). But the errors I listed were not all there are, as there are clearly more. For example, on page 50 of the textbook where it quotes the MAYFLOWER COMPACT as saying "by these presents," the student would think it is referring to gifts. The truth, however, is that the word is "present," not "presents," and refers to the Pilgrims located there.

Even worse than this, the textbook quotes the COMPACT as stating, "Having undertaken a voyage to plant the first colony," when it actually states: "Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony...." What does it say about the BLP that it thought it important to leave out "for the Glory of God" and "Advancement of our Christian faith"? Beyond the factual errors, try and figure out whether the BLP is proud of the National Education Association's support or running from it ! The BLP website wants visitors to know their textbook is not endorsed by the NEA. However, the website also says its THE BIBLE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS: A FIRST AMENDMENT GUIDE should be used with its textbook, and BLP vice-president Sheila Weber has proudly published that their Guide is endorsed by the NEA!
